  • Is not proactive, just reactive.  In other words, just sits and waits for issues to arise, instead of getting involved and helping so issues don’t happen.
  • Does not motivate staff.
  • Does not interact with staff, just sits and lets others work.
  • Places the blame on others instead of accepting responsibility.
  • Doesn’t respect the staff.  Feels he/she is better than them.

If there is a lack of team cohesion in your business, you might want to start looking at the managers.  This is just a small list of things to look for.  If you have one of these

bad managers, know that the GOOD STAFF will give up and leave.  They don’t need to put up with it.  They go find a job where they have good teammates, are appreciated, get proper training, and are motivated and happy.  I know I have done so in the past.

Make sure the manager in your business:

  • Trains your staff properly and has the resources available to do their job properly.
  • Interacts with your staff.  Works beside them on occasion.  As a result, not only will they appreciate the manager being “one of them”, but they feel more comfortable communicating their needs … ie: to make my job easier, I could really use  ____.  Therefore, they will respect management and feel like they can approach when they need to.
  • Keeps eyes and ears open all the time.  Do you hear someone struggling?  Do you not like the way a phone call is being handled?  Get involved.
  • Accepts responsibility for problems with your staff – doesn’t throw them under the bus!  In other words, address the issue with them, but don’t go telling your customers or you – it was “Jane’s” fault.
  • Builds the team, respects the team, and motivates the team!
  • Sets clear expectations
  • Trustworthy and transparent
  • Productive
  • Appreciative

Put simply, what separates a good manager from a bad one, is that the former puts efforts to build a work culture that trusts, while the latter contributes to workplace toxicity.  Look not only at your manager but also at your employees and how they are treated by your manager.  Make sure you know the difference between good manager vs bad manager so that you can run your business productively and profitably.

Signs of a bad manager:

  • Office toxicity
  • Lack of communication
  • Indulges in blame games
  • Micromanaging when not needed
  • Discourages innovation

They nitpick and find faults in everything you do. Good managers, on the other hand, give constructive feedback that helps you improve your work.

-Bad managers blame others for their mistakes while good managers take responsibility for their failures.
-Bad managers create an atmosphere of fear while good ones create an atmosphere of trust and respect.
