Hiring in Today’s Job Market is tough!
Hiring in Today’s Job Market – Using Indeed.
If you have had to hire anyone recently, you know that it is tougher now than it has been in years. It is an employee-driven job market for sure right now. How do we deal with this? How do you find the best employee? Some of the tactics we have used in the past just aren’t getting us the applicants we desire, so how can we step up our game?
First of all, you need to be smart about how you search. Of course, recommendations from other employees is the easiest way to go, but we all don’t get that lucky. But if you do have a recommendation from someone you trust, follow through to see if they would be a good fit.
Craigslist used to work well for us, but now it is a hit and miss, more miss right now. I believe it is still working for the smaller local business, looking for a certain type of employee. However, now that they charge for ads in most places, it seems to have fallen out of favor. And the reputation for the issues people have had – spam, fake ads, and all has hurt this search option.
Hiring in Today’s Job Market – Using Indeed
Indeed.com seems to be the way to go right now. They have really improved the website to make it much more user-friendly. Some of the great features are:
- There is a free version – always a plus!
- It is easy to create an account and post a job. It emails you each application, but you can just view them from their website to make it easier.
- When reviewing, you can either
- Reject
- Show interested
- Then you can search your candidates by interest level and not have to sort through all the rejects – they are removed, making it easier to search through the ones you want to talk to.
- You can change the status as you move through the process, helping again to sort through the candidates. I suggest replying to each candidate with a few more questions to qualify them. A lot won’t even bother to reply, so you can reject those also a few days after you send the questions. They are probably not that interested and just were throwing resumes out to fill a quota or something along those lines.
- For those that do reply, the next step would be a phone interview. Ask some qualifying questions….. If they pass, move them to the phone screen status. There is a place to add notes about the candidates on the site also.
- Once you are ready to set interviews, the Indeed.com site lets you set up the interviews directly by emailing the candidate with the time, address, and any additional notes, ie: how to find you, parking info, etc. The site asks them to confirm the appointment. If you use Outlook, it even puts it on your calendar for you.
- If they show up for the interview – this is another tough part (I have 2 out of the 4 scheduled today actually show), then you can add notes about the interview.
All of this is great, as now you have to go through SO MANY candidates to try to find someone. It is a process, but if you control it right, it won’t waste your time.
