You have the applications, now what?
Job Application Review
This part can be overwhelming! First, you need to go through the applications and take out any that did not include the answers to your questions, doesn’t fit the skills, background, etc.
Transferable skills
One thing to remember when doing your job application review is Transferable Skills. Transferable skills, or “portable” skills, are the abilities you can transfer from one job to another. The term transferable skills collectively refer to such skills as communication, adaptability, or collaboration to name a few.
If you still have a large pool of candidates, another “weeding out” trick I’ve used is to have a couple of “informational” group meetings – invite them to one of them. Use this opportunity to give a more detailed description of the position, show them around, answer questions. Some won’t show, others won’t be interested. You can also rule out those who didn’t bother to put their best foot forward at this meeting. Now you hopefully have a manageable amount of resumes to consider.
Another thing that I do to weed out the people who are just sending in resumes to fill a quota, is to respond to their resume with a list of questions. It is surprising how many do not respond. It can be simple questions like what hours are you available to work. Or more difficult questions like, why do you want to work for our company. I always include a link to the ad to refresh their memory on what job it was that they applied for.
This can be a long process, but remember, the more time you dedicate to finding the right team member, the better your business will be, and the easier your job will be.
